Tarkwa Library, A Death Trap

The tattered ceiling of the library

The Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Library in the Western Region is currently in a deplorable condition and now appears to serve as death trap for patrons and workers.

DAILY GUIDE learnt that the library was commissioned by the late former Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama in August 2004 and was later renovated by Toyota Ghana in 2008 but the facility has since not seen any renovation.

The building has developed cracks at its basement and the beams supporting it have also developed cracks with tattered ceiling.

The roof leaks anytime it rains and the water seeps through the tattered ceiling to the floor and can flood the entire library and destroy some books as well.

The library’s toilet facility is also completely damaged.

Speaking in an interview, some students who patronized the place said the state of the library was not attractive for studies.

They complained that most books in the library were outmoded and did not contain the information they needed to enhance their studies.

They called on authorities concerned to as a matter of urgency do something about the situation in order to save the only library in Tarkwa from collapsing.

The librarian in charge of the Tarkwa Municipal Library, Eunice Prabeng, said she had written to draw the attention of the municipal assembly to the bad state of the library but had not received any response yet.

She also appealed to stakeholders, particularly corporate bodies, to help renovate the library in order to help improve reading and education in the municipality.
