Tension At Suame Magazine Over Spare Parts Trade

Suame Magazine, Kumasi

Tension is mounting at Suame Magazine in Kumasi where Ghanaian and Nigerian spare parts dealers have clashed.

The Ghanaians are of the view that the Nigerians have no right under the laws of Ghana to retail spare parts.

According to them, the continuous participation of Nigerians in the retail sector was adversely affecting their businesses.

The Ghanaians also complained about the financial muscle of the Nigerians who have virtually hijacked the spare parts business.

They said all attempts to stop the Nigerians, as stipulated by the laws of the country, have proved futile so far.

The Ghanaians, therefore, decided to force the Nigerians, who are foreigners, out of business.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that tension has been high at Suame Magazine and nearby areas since the start of this week.

Some of the Ghanaian spare parts dealers allegedly locked the shops of the Nigerians to get them out of business.

The Nigerians, who feared for their lives, left Suame Magazine to avert attacks.

The paper learnt that the security situation at Suame Magazine in Kumasi caught the attention of the Ashanti Regional Police Command.

Reports said the Police subsequently called a meeting between the leadership of Ghanaian and Nigerian dealers.

The crunch meeting, the paper gathered, formed part of plans by the police in the region to bring lasting peace to Suame Magazine.
