THE MORTAL remains of former First Lady, Theresa Kufuor, was interred during a private ceremony at Daabaa, in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District in the Ashanti Region, the hometown of her surviving husband, ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor, last Thursday.
The solemn programme was, reportedly, attended by family members of both the deceased and ex-President Kufuor, some traditional leaders as well as the clergy.
According to reports, the children of the late First Lady were also present when the coffin was lowered into the grave.
Funeral Rites
The final funeral rites of the late Theresa Kufuor took place at the Heroes Park at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital, on Saturday afternoon.
The event was graced by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, Vice President, Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia and his wife, Samira Bawumia.
Also present were the Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, ministers of state, businessmen, the clergy, and traditional leaders from Asanteman and other parts of the country.
The dignitaries, including President Akufo-Addo and other mourners, in turns, consoled ex-President Kufuor, who was surrounded by his family members including Dr. Addo Kufuor, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh aka ‘Napo’ and others.
The funeral rites was characterised by the singing of traditional Asante dirges and the dancing of ‘Kete’ and ‘Adowa’ by the mourners, especially Ing Nana Poku Agyeman, who stole the show with his sublime dancing skills.
Thanksgiving Service
On Sunday morning, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, also joined former President Kufuor and others to attend a thanksgiving service at the Saint Peter’s Cathedral in Kumasi.
Scores of friends and sympathisers, especially some prominent chiefs in Asanteman and top politicians, were also at the thanksgiving service to offer their support to ex-President Kufuor.
