Thousands Weep For Dead Colts Footballers

The deceased footballers

A sad spectacle yesterday characterised the funeral service of eight footballers of Africa Vision Academy, an Offinso-based colts club in Offinso.

Four of the eight juvenile footballers were buried during a mass burial in the Ashanti Region.

In attendance at a public burial service included the Youth & Sports Minister, Isaac Asiamah, who led government delegation, traditional leaders at Offinso, families and friends of the deceased young footballers.

The eight juveniles, who had hopes of becoming future football stars, got perished during a gory road crash, which saw a mini bus they were travelling on somersaulting before plunging into the Offin River recently.

The accident, which happened on September 21, 2020, also led to other young footballers of the same colts club, who were returning to Offinso after a registration exercise, sustaining injuries.

Isaac Asiamah disclosed that the death of the young footballers had come as a big blow and shock to President Akufo-Addo and Ghanaians in general.

On behalf of the government, he passionately prayed for God’s grace and power to comfort and strengthen the bereaved families to face these difficult moments, adding that God should also heal the injured footballers.

The minister said government would bear the cost of the treatment of the injured footballers to help them to recover soon, adding that the bereaved families would also be supported in the burial and funeral activities.

According to him, government has plans of constructing a modern AstroTurf facility at Offinso in the memory of the deceased footballers and helping to promote football and sports in general.
