The Director of Political Affairs at the Office of the Chief of Staff at the Presidency, Frank Asiedu Bekoe, aka Protozoa, an aspiring parliamentary candidate for the Suhum Constituency on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is giving the MP, Oboafo Kwadjo Asante, who is seeking re-election, a run for his money after declaring his intention to contest the seat.
Currently, there is political tension in the constituency, as the constituents believe that it would be a two-horse race between the sitting MP and Protozoa, as the two come face-to-face.
Oboafo Kwadjo Asante, in June 2020, won the parliamentary primaries after defeating the then MP, Frederick Opare-Ansah by polling 394 votes out of 666 votes cast against Opare Ansah, who garnered 272 votes, representing 122 vote difference.
Oboafo Kwadjo Asante, since taking over the office, has taken measures to embark on some developmental projects in the areas of health, education, and roads, among others across the constituency and would have wished to go unopposed, but Protozoa has showed up.
The MP, in the 2020 general elections, won a total of 34,049 votes representing 63% against the NDC candidate, Amanda Okyere, who garnered 19,192 votes, representing 36% out of the total cast votes of 53,779.
Protozoa, after receiving a clearance to contest, explained that his decision to enter the electoral race has been met with enthusiasm by party members and constituents alike, who view his candidacy as a significant boost for the NPP’s prospects in the upcoming elections.
According to him, “I am honoured to step forward and offer myself to serve the wonderful people of Suhum. My goal is to champion initiatives that foster growth, create opportunities, and address the pressing needs of our community.”
Oboafo Kwadjo Asante, on the other hand, noted that as a representative of the people of Suhum in 2020 he has brought a lot of development projects to the constituency.
He explained that he had planted a ‘seed’ and it had yielded good fruits in the three years when the people of Suhum voted for him to be their MP.
According to him, he has unfinished business with the people of Suhum and has to complete it before he can say goodbye to his constituents.
Kwadjo Asante said he is optimistic that the delegates in the Suhum Constituency, who in their last internal primaries voted massively for him and defeated his opponent with a 15,000 vote margin, will do the same for him on January 27, 2024.
He further urged the delegates to vote for a tried and tested person to do more for them in 2025.
