Train Crashes At Tesano

The derailed train

An Accra-Tema bound passenger train derailed at Tesano, a suburb of Accra, yesterday morning.

The incident occurred between the Tesano and Alajo section of the railway line.

Eyewitnesses accounts suggest that the last coach of the train got detached before it stopped.

There was fear and panic among the passengers when the train finally stopped, DAILY GUIDE gathered. At least three people have been confirmed injured.

Details of what actually caused the accident are yet to be established, but there are claims that the nature of the tracks played a role.

According to eyewitnesses, the injured were assisted to come out of the train by some recruits from the Tesano Police Training School.

The recruits, this paper understands, were on their routine training when the incident happened, and they had to stop their exercise to render help.

Meanwhile, the CEO of Ghana Railways Development Authority, Richard Diadong Dombo, has indicated that the casualties were minimal because the train was moving at a speed of 5 kilometres per hour.

He said an investigation would be conducted to ascertain the actual cause of the accident.

Mr Dombo indicated that the authority would be undertaking a holistic review of the sector and that no stone would be left unturned in improving it (sector).

The CEO added that groundwork was being done and that the authority is poised to ensure that only competent companies are given contracts to undertake infrastructure development in the sector.

This is not the first time such an accident has occurred.

There was a similar derailment on the Tesano rail lines in February 2015, which involved an Accra-Nsawam bound train, where part of it disentangled from the rest of the coaches.

The intra-city train shuttle transport many commuters to and from the capital on a daily basis.
