A first year student of the Takoradi Technical University (TTU), Abubakar Sadick, has been sacked from the university after he allegedly brought some Zongo youth from Takoradi to attack some students on campus.

The attack was initially mistaken to be a robbery attack on campus but the Western Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), Chief Supt Isaac Kwasi Sorkpah later confirmed that the attack was not a robbery attack but an organised mob attack on some students.

According to Chief Supt Sorkpah, the mob attack was as a result of a misunderstanding between two students, one of whom had his mobile phone stolen.

A first year student, Abubakar Sadick, who had his mobile phone stolen, accused his friend of stealing the phone and therefore brought the Zongo boys to come and teach his friend ‘a lesson’ on campus.

According to the MTTD commander, during the altercation, the campus security man who wanted to intervene was attacked and injured by the gang.

Registrar

Explaining the circumstances leading to the expulsion of Sadick in an interview on Skyy Power FM in Takoradi, the Registrar of TTU, Dr. Moses Abnory, said Sadick had wanted to take a mobile phone into an examination hall but invigilators asked him to keep the phone outside the examination hall.

According to the Registrar, Abubakar Sadick decided to put the phone into a bag outside the examination hall which he thought belonged to a friend of his but the bag was a wrong bag.

“So after the examination, Abu confronted his colleague for his phone but the friend denied seeing any phone in his bag and so a misunderstanding ensued between them,” the Registrar explained.

He said Abu then invited his friends from the Zongo community in Takoradi who stormed the campus on a motorbike wielding cutlasses and other forms of offensive weapons to attack his colleague who he (Abu) thought was in possession of his phone.

According to the Registrar, the gang first went to the hostel but the student Abu had accused was not there and so the gang attacked his roommates.

The incident attracted other students who also went in to attack the group and managed to capture two of them who were handed over to the security men on campus while others managed to escape.

Later, the Disciplinary Committee of the university took the decision that the student should be expelled.

Meanwhile, the institution has handed over the student to the police for further investigations.
