A mini-rally organized by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to welcome some supposed defectors from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) at Busah in the Upper West Region went bizarre on Friday evening as the so-called defectors failed to show up.
The Wa Central constituency NDC had indicated that over 100 disgruntled members of the NPP at Busah had switched camp to the NDC and were waiting to be officially sworn in as members of the party.
The news attracted the attention of many party bigwigs who drove to the community to witness the occasion.
The Wa central constituency executives of the NDC, led by their chairman Mohammed Sule, thronged Busah in anticipation of initiating the new converts into their fold.
However, things did not go as expected as the NDC leadership waited for hours at the main venue without the defectors turning up to be initiated.
The chairman and his team then went to the Busah daily market where the rally was rescheduled.
After more than an hour, a group of minors showed up for the swearing in.
Some were as young as eleven years while the oldest was about seventeen.
None of the minors had NPP membership card or any proof of membership.
One of the underaged who spoke to Citi News said “I was told that they were bringing us food and other freebies. That is why I joined the group”.
The Wa Central Chairman who was visibly disappointed at the turn of events, charged members of the NDC in the area to work hard to widen the frontiers of the party.
He said “unlike the NPP, we are for everybody. You can join us today and be a leader tomorrow. So let this go down to the electorate”.
The chairman told the youngsters that “in the next NDC regime, we will open up galamsey for everybody to do. You can see how the NPP is putting pressure on people who engage in galamsey.” citifmonline.com
