The chiefs and people of Vakpo in the Volta Region want a new district to be created for them in the area.

There are currently two districts assemblies in North and South Dayi, but the chiefs want an entirely new one to be created for them with the name Central Dayi District Assembly.

The request was made when a delegation from the Vakpo Traditional Area, which is currently in the North Dayi District led by Togbega Gbogbolulu V, Paramount Chief of the Vakpo Traditional Council paid a courtesy call on President Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House yesterday.

Togbega Gbogbolulu V said: “The population in the Central Dayi Area is huge and qualifies for a separate Assembly.”

Vakpo, he said, has a large tract of land to support the establishment of all requisite infrastructure for the district.

They also expressed concern about the claim that Vakpo was overlooked as the capital for the North Dayi District Assembly because the people of Vakpo and their chiefs supported the New Patriotic Party (NPP), particularly President Akufo-Addo.

The delegation also appealed to the President to consider establishing a food processing factory at Vakpo in order to process huge quantities of garden eggs, mangoes and cashew nuts that are harvested in the Vakpo Traditional Area.

They also asked government to consider constructing a bridge over the Dayi River.

President Akufo-Addo later said he would do everything possible to meet their needs.

“For the people who vilified you and abused you for supporting NPP, they say in this world, every dawn has a day, so your day to has come.  Obviously we have to see what we also can do to reciprocate,” the President said.

The delegation from Vakpo included Mama Dzomagbelata V, Togbe Sifa V, Togbe Awono V, Togbe Dobo V, Togbe Dogbega V, Mama Foedza V and Togbe Gidimakpe I.

The rest were Mama Alormenu II, Togbe Akoni IV, Togbe Afayibi, Zikpuitor Kofi Obimpeh, Grace Paemka, Peter Abiti, an elder and Ernest Yaw Obimpeh.
