Vice Chancellor of Wisconsin International University College Ghana (WIUC), Paul Fynn, says private universities will thrive if the government withdraws withholding tax imposed on them.
He said even though private universities have recently been exempted from corporate tax, the scrapping of the withholding tax would boost their activities.
“We need support from the government, but not in the form of money because they are not going to give us money anyway. We need support in the area of tax,” he said.
According to him, private universities pay tax on books and facilities imported to run programmes in the various faculties and therefore called on government to revisit the tax regime to help give tax free for books and other materials.
Dr. Fynn disclosed this at a brief ceremony to award students who represented WIUC in the Graphic Tertiary Business Sense Competition for Business Schools and emerged second out of 12 public and private universities.
He said the brilliant performance of the students in the competition proved that private universities in the country would be the best in the near future, adding that “with very little support and little interference from government, private universities will do so well”.
The participants have been awarded full scholarships for the remaining of their study in WIUC, as well as 30% discount for a Masters Programme in the institution in addition to GH?200 to cover transportation.
Dr. Fynn indicated that the package would motivate other students to study hard.
WIUC was represented by Evans Agyeman, Level 400 Bsc Accounting student, Nana Kwasi Sarpong, Level 400 BBS Banking and Finance student, Lariba Abiba Zackaria, Level 300 BBS Accounting, with Severin Kokou Agbegbon, Level 300 BBS Accounting student as a standby for the team.
The participants, who were coached by three lectures, were each presented with GH?1,000.
