The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will officially commission the124 housing units of Appiatse which form part of the first phase of the community’s reconstruction project, on Thursday, May 2, 2024.

Dr. Bawumia who will be in the area as part of his campaign tour in the Western Region, will also cut the sod for the construction of additional 70 housing units as part of Phase II of the project.

The completion of the phase one of the Appiatse reconstruction, indicates the government’s commitment to rebuild the mining community in the Prestea Huni Valley Municipality of the Western Region and make it a model Rural community.

On Thursday, January 20, 2022, the entire Appiatse community was razed down when a truck carrying explosives to a mining site exploded in the community.

About 13 people were reported to have died from the incident, with several others sustaining different degrees of injuries.

The government promised to ensure the reconstruction of about 124 housing units that were destroyed in the community.

Immediately after the incident, the affected residents were moved to a temporary resettlement to prevent further hardship on the people, particularly, as the rains descended.

About 40 buildings owned by Future Global Resources (FGR) a mining company in the region were also refurbished for the resettlement of some of the victims.

The government also launched an endowment fund to help in the rebuilding of the community, as well as the rehabilitation of persons, affected by the explosion.

Currently, works on the first phase of the community’s reconstruction including re-connecting the area to the national grid, have been completed and the Vice President will be in the area on Thursday to commission it.

Meanwhile, DAILY GUIDE has gathered that the people of Appiatse and its surrounding communities including Bepoh are gearing up to give the Vice President a rousing welcome.

The Assembly member for Bepoh-Appiatse electoral area, Thomas Yaw Enyam told the paper in an interview that prior to the Vice President’s visit, there had been series of community engagements to give the necessary information concerning the event to the people.

He pointed out that apart from the community being connected to the national grid, officials from the Community Water Department are also in the area to ensure access to portable water.

He disclosed that all the school projects have been completed and are ready for use by the children.

“So all is set for the programme and we are all waiting patiently for the Vice President and his entourage and we are poised to give them a rousing welcome”, he pointed out.
