We Do Not Support Our Own Movies – Yvonne Okoro

Actress and producer, Yvonne Okoro, has bemoaned the lack of support for local films, accusing audiences of holding Ghanaian productions to a higher standard than foreign movies.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z with Kwame Dadzie, she said audiences often dismiss local films while embracing Hollywood and Nigerian productions, even when their quality is questionable.

“We do not support our own. Everything Ghanaian, we see it as sub-standard. And when you say this, people get offended by it, but it’s the truth,” she said.

Yvonne argued that some viewers readily enjoy poor-quality foreign films but use similar shortcomings in Ghanaian productions to condemn the local industry.

“I am sorry, some Hollywood movies are horrible. You watch it and clap,” she said, adding that some Nigerian YouTube productions receive praise while Ghanaian films are unfairly criticised.

She also lamented that audiences often overlook quality Ghanaian films, only expressing surprise at their standard after discovering them.

“When we do good movies, they will go like, ‘I didn’t know this was there oo.’ I have been marketing for how long now; you didn’t know this was there. They just won’t come and watch it,” she said.

Her comments came during a discussion on the state of Ghana’s film industry and the need for greater audience support.

Yvonne’s acting credits include Beyonce: The President’s Daughter, Contract, Potomanto, Rebecca, Ghana Must Go and Fix Us. She has also produced films including ‘Contract’ and ‘Ghana Must Go’.

She currently stars in Agency for the Dead, directed by Shirley Frimpong-Manso, which is scheduled to hit Silverbird Cinemas on October 30, 2026.
