We’ll Address Schools’ Infrastructural Challenges – Bawumia

Mahamudu Bawumia

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has stated government’s commitment to addressing the infrastructural challenges facing senior high schools in the country.

Government, he added, will continue with its plans to increase access to secondary education across the country.

He said these over the weekend

at the climax of the 60th anniversary celebration of the Navrongo Senior High School in Navrongo in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality of the Upper East Region. The theme for the occasion was “Sustaining sixty years of quality education in Navrongo Senior High School – The role of stakeholders.”

Navrongo Senior High School, established in the year 1960, is the first secondary school in the then Upper Region and has trained many personalities who have served in various regional and national top positions, including the Minister of the Interior, Ambrose Dery and the Minority leader in Ghana’s Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu, former Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu and many others.

The school has a total student population of 2,124, with a total of 191 teaching staff and 70 non teaching staff.

Government, he gave the assurance, will ensure that all ongoing infrastructure projects being funded by the state will receive the needed supervision and financial attention to complete them and hand them over for use. He mentioned Navrongo Senior High School among schools in Ghana that are benefiting from the government’s investment to extend the free Wifi connection to schools.

He called on traditional authorities who have released lands for school projects to help protect them from encroachment.

The headmistress of the school, Ms. Mercy Babachuweh said a greater percentage of the disciplinary cases in the school border on truancy because students are able to sneak out of school due to the absence of a fence wall.

She, therefore, called on government to help fence the school to address the trend and to protect it from encroachment.

She also appealed to the government to complete a girls’ dormitory that has stalled to ease the pressure on accommodation in the school.

Madam Babachuweh commended the Old Students Association of the school (NABIA Global) for funding many projects in the school.

The Vice President donated an amount of GH¢100,000.00 on behalf of President Akufo-Addo and himself, to the school authorities to complete some self initiated projects in the school.
