The Women’s Rights and Gender Equality Coalition, the Affirmative Action Bill Coalition (AABC), the Network of Women’s Rights in Ghana (NETRIGHT), the Women Manifesto Coalition (WMC), and the Domestic Violence Coalition (DVC), have called on major political parties to comply with the 30% women representation in a political position when voted into power.

Following the enactment of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024 (AA Act), many have called for the increase of women’s participation in governance in the next administration as the country prepares for its polls.

Speaking at the Press Conference on ‘Marking the Passage Of The Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024’, Convener for the AABC, Sheila Minkah-Premo Esq., said “Between now as the country goes to the polls, thus, between 2024 and 2026, we are pushing for 30% representation in governance appointment.”

Sheila Minkah-Premo, Esq. added that women can now look forward to being progressively integrated into key decision-making spaces, having a seat at the table where decisions are made, and having their skills and expertise tapped into for the good of the country.

The Mobilisation Manager for Abantu for Development and Convenor for Women’s Manifesto Coalition, Hamida Harrison, added that women can look forward to feeling safe and protected even as they occupy the key spaces that will open up for them.

Coordinator, AA Bill Coalition, Becky Enyonam Ahadzi, also stated that “as we move forward, we must ensure that the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Law 2024 is implemented effectively to accelerate the pace towards a truly equal and inclusive society.

“By prioritising women’s rights and gender equality through the passage of this Act, we aim to create a more accountable and participatory system that benefits all citizens.”
