Working Lady Mothers Navrongo Orphans

Thirty (30) orphans are beneficiaries of the humanism of a 33-year-old working lady, Imelda R. Kumbuno.

One of the beneficiaries has completed a degree programme at the Maritime University at Nungua in Accra. The journey which culminated in the establishment of the Saint Imelda Boarding School for Orphans in Mirigu, a suburb of Navrongo, in the Upper East Region, started in 2000 with only three orphans.

Today, the mustard seed, as it were, has developed into an orphanage containing 65 children. Ten (10) of the children are between two months and six years, whilst 55 are between seven (7) and 16 years.

According to Imelda R. Kumbuno, aside from the many successes chalked up in increasing the number of children in the orphanage and school enrolments for nearly all the children of school-going age, there is still more to do in terms of improved accommodation, sanitary conditions, healthcare and daily rations.

She has expressed gratitude to the outstanding personalities whom she said have been supportive of the project to date. She singled out the former Headmistress of Labone Senior High School, William A. Aduum, MCE for Navrongo Central, and Najat Mohammed, Headmaster Oxford International School.

“Despite all these immense contributions and donations, we are still in need of more of contributions and donations to embrace more vulnerable children within the district and region, and to also lessen the over-dependence on the limited resources and infrastructure at our disposal. More tutors or teaching instructors must be employed to aid the children in the various subjects and basic teaching materials such as books, writing pads, pens, pencils, crayons, colors, slates, whiteboards, markers etc.  Food and medical care is also another major area of concern . . .” she said.

She added “with limited funds available, the children are usually given a meal a day during weekends. The building these children are housed in is deplorable during the rainy season. It is however on these pressing needs that the children of Young Saint Imelda plead that you come to their aid”.
