Osei Asibey (R) receiving his plaque from the global boss

President of World Armwrestling Federation (WAF), Assen Hadjitodorov, has presented a WAF plaque to Charles Osei Asibey, President of the Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA) for his dedication and promotion of armwrestling on the continent.

He said he was proud of the development of the sport in Africa, and encouraged members to do more to develop and promote the sport to ensure sustainable participation.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 12th Africa Armwrestling Championship held in Accra, Mr. Hadjitodorov mentioned that, “I call on my Vice President, Mr. Osei Asibey, to join up here to present our memorable plaque to express our gratitude for organising this great championship for us.”

He added that WAF was considering giving Ghana the hosting rights for the 2024 World Armwrestling Championship due to the country’s lead in the growth of the sport in Africa.

“Maybe as you already know, there is another goal we are trying to achieve, this is to bring the World Armwrestling Championship here in Accra, and I am convinced that Ghana and Africa deserve this high stage and to bring the world championship here as well,” he stated.

Under his leadership as AFA President since July 2022, Africa has become the first continental body in the world apart from the WAF to develop an automated scoring system to improve competitions on the African continent.

Part of his remarkable achievements include ensuring that armwrestling becomes one of the sporting disciplines at the 13th African Games, which will be hosted by Ghana in March 2024.

African armwrestling has now been inducted into the internationally acclaimed Arnold Classic competition, which is one of the most prestigious global events.

The sport will also feature at the World Combat Games which will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia later this year.

The National Armwrestling Team, Golden Arms, emerged overall winners of the 12th edition of the Africa Armwrestling Championship after winning 132 medals made up of 47 gold medals, 55 silver medals and 30 bronze medals to accumulate 1,088 points.
