Yamfo Residents Call For End To Litigation

Yamfo youth and some affected farmers calling for Otumfuo’s intervention

Residents of Yamfo in Tano North Municipality of the Ahafo Region have called on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to intervene in a land litigation case between the Yamfo Traditional Council and Duayaw Nkwanta Traditional Council.

The residents claimed the situation had stalled development of the area. According to the youth, including farmers affected by the situation, the continuous litigation over the rightful owner of a concession allocated to Newmont Ghana Gold Limited for exploration and mining had rendered the youth jobless.

At press a briefing on Tuesday, the Spokesperson for the affected farmers, Emmanuel Gyamfi, said because of compensations and royalties from the mining giant, each traditional council had taken an entrenched position on the matter to the detriment of the people.

According to Mr. Gyamfi, when the company begins operations, the youth in Yamfo and its environs will get jobs to do and the affected farmers will also receive their compensation.

He appealed to the Overload of the area, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to intervene and settle the issue quickly for operations to begin for them to also find jobs. He said the affected communities included Yamfo, Sosuanso, Techire and Adrogba.

He claimed Newmont had promised to establish a factory to create employment avenues in addition to those who would be employed by the company.
