Youth Attack Another Gay

Abdul Rakeem Yunus

Gay-bashing seems to be on the ascendancy in Ghana, with the latest taking place at Aboabo Number 1 in Kumasi, Ashanti Region.

An eyewitness told this reporter that a certain Abdul Rakeem Yunus was attacked for being gay by a number of youth in the community who were returning from a football match.

The youth were said to have initiated moves to set Abdul Rakeem ablaze or kill him by some other means, but he managed to escape with the help of some sympathisers.

Recently, Kumasi, together with its environs, is gaining notoriety for gay-bashing.

It would be recalled that in May last year, the mother of a young lady in a village outside Kumasi organized a mob to beat up her own daughter and another woman because she suspected they were lesbian partners.

Police protection for the victims in such situations are nonexistent apparently due to the fact that the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) proscribes unnatural carnal knowledge which results from same-sex relationship.
