Yutong Bus Crash Claims 3 Lives In T’di

The yotoung bus after the accident

A ghastly accident that occurred between Beposo and Inchaban on the Takoradi-Accra highway in the Western Region, involving a Yutong bus and a tipper truck yesterday morning, claimed three lives.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that the accident happened at a spot where a new speed ramp is currently being constructed by the Ghana Highway Authority.

According to reports, the bus, with customized registration number, Freedom 1-15, which was moving from Aflao to Elubo, was carrying about 53 passengers – most of who were Ivorians – when the accident occurred.

DSP Olivia Ewurabena Adiku, Western Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), who confirmed the accident to DAILY GUIDE, indicated that it occurred at about 4:15 am yesterday.

She disclosed that the accident occurred when the Aflao to Elubo bound Yutong bus collided head-on with a tipper truck with registration number GE 3350-14.

She added that the three people – two males and a female – were confirmed dead on the spot while others who were seriously injured were rushed to the St. Benedict and the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospitals for treatment.

Toll Booth Canopy Collapses

In another development, a metal canopy under construction over a new tollbooth at Beposo collapsed on Tuesday, blocking the road and thereby rendering scores of passengers and motorists stranded.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident, which occurred at about 2:00   pm, was caused by excavation works by the contractor working on the tollbooth.

Initial reports were that it was the tollbooth – which is still under construction – that collapsed as the workers decided to break a portion of it for further repairs.

DSP Olivia Ewurabena Adiku claimed that there was no casualty.

The Western Regional Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Abdul Mohammed Ganiyu, said that it was the Ghana Highway Authority that decided to demolish the structure for reconstruction.

According to him, it was realized that the canopy had some defects which posed a great danger to motorists and residents and so the Authority decided to bring it down for reconstruction.
