Prof. Ebenezer Oduro-Owusu, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana (UG), has called on Dr. Charles Brenya Wiafe-Akenteng, the newly installed 16th Master of Legon Hall, to guard against any temptation to use the hall’s Internally Generated Funds (IGF) without authorisation from the management of the university.

According to him, using IGF comes with procedures which must be adhered to in order to avoid facing charges of financial impropriety.

Speaking very passionately on the above issue at the installation of the new Hall Master who was being sworn into office for a three-year term at the Legon Hall Chapel on Saturday, Prof Oduro-Owusu urged him to constantly update himself with all the public financial management procedures including those of the university.

“Consult appropriate authorities when in doubt and do not take things for granted when it comes to financial matters; if this is too hard for you to go by, it’s much better to relinquish your position now as it is much better to save yourself from the embarrassment of being made to face the law just because your intention had been to satisfy some groups,” he pointed out.

Prof. Oduro-Owusu, while congratulating the new Master, further urged him to exude a leadership quality that would translate into influencing students to adopt mindsets that would help to build the university into the world-class model it aspires to be.

Enumerating the duties of the Master of Legon Hall, Prof. Alexander Kwadwo Nyarko, Most Senior Fellow of the Hall, indicated that it is an onerous responsibility by any standard especially in the light of the current tough economic circumstances, adding that it takes courage of conviction, firmness, tact and composure to make any impact during ones mandate as Master.

According to him, Legon Hall is the oldest hall of residence in the university and has a very rich history. It has a student population of 1,337 comprising 1,206 undergraduates and 131 postgraduates.

“You are a veteran in the affairs of Legon Hall having held almost every important position and for this we are hopeful that your wealth of experience will help you build on what your predecessors have achieved,” he added.

Dr. Charles Brenya Wiafe-Akenteng is currently a Social Psychologist and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychology, University of Ghana. He is also the coordinator of undergraduate project work in the department.

He has and continues to serve on a number of boards and committees of the university.
