Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service rescuing victims from the wreckage
A devastating road accident at Peki-Tsame in the Volta Region has claimed the lives of 15 people and left 25 others injured, according to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
The tragic crash occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, June 2, 2026, near Peki Senior High School when a Mercedes-Benz container truck with registration number WR 1553-C, travelling from Nkwanta to Accra, collided head-on with a Mercedes-Benz passenger bus bearing registration number GR 3215-E, which was travelling from Battor to Kabiti in the Oti Region.
The Ghana National Fire Service stated that personnel from the Peki Fire Station responded swiftly to the scene and launched a coordinated rescue operation.
A total of 40 people were involved in the accident, comprising 21 males, 15 females, and four children.
Firefighters successfully extricated 25 injured victims, including 23 adults and two children, from the wreckage. The injured were subsequently transported to the Peki Government Hospital for medical treatment.
However, the accident resulted in the deaths of 15 people, made up of nine males and six females. The deceased were handed over to the Ghana Police Service, which conveyed the bodies to the mortuary for preservation and further investigations.
Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the collision, with investigations currently underway.
The Ghana National Fire Service extended its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and urged motorists to strictly adhere to road traffic regulations. The Service also cautioned drivers against dangerous driving practices and called for greater vigilance on the roads to help reduce accidents and save lives.
The incident adds to growing concerns about road safety in Ghana, highlighting the need for increased caution among road users and stronger enforcement of traffic regulations.
