The accident scene
Two individuals have lost their lives with seven others, including two females and five males, sustaining various degrees of injuries in the Birimso Bridge accident on the N6 Highway (Accra-Kumasi Highway).
The road traffic collision, which occurred yesterday, involved a fuel tanker, a Mitsubishi pick-up (GE-8602-17), a KIA Sorento (GT-8601-14), and an STC bus (GS-7050-22).
The fuel tanker, STC bus, and Mitsubishi pick-up were completely destroyed by fire, while the KIA Sorento sustained extensive damage.
Personnel from the Bunso fire station led by ADOI Samuel Doe and Suhum Municipal Fire Stations led by ADOI Moses Quaye were at the scene, working tirelessly to bring the situation under control.
DOIII Ohemeng Aaron, Regional Public Relations Officer, Eastern Regional Fire Command, in an interview, stated that, “We entreat motorists and other road users to cooperate fully with fire officers on the ground as they work to completely extinguish the fire and ensure the safety of everyone.”
At the time of filing this report, the Ghana Police Service Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) disclosed that motorists on the N6 Accra-Kumasi Highway should expect delays due to the accident. They added that personnel from the Eastern South Regional Police MTTD in Kibi were at the scene managing traffic.
As a temporary measure, traffic was diverted as follows: Accra-bound traffic: through Kibi at Nsutam, Kumasi-bound traffic: through Apedwa. The police urged all motorists and road users to cooperate with officers on the ground as efforts were underway to clear the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow. Road users were advised to exercise patience and follow diversion signs.
