23 Killed In Kintampo Accident

The mangled bus

TWENTY-THREE passengers,  seventeen men, four women and two children were confirmed dead in a gory accident between Kintampo and Babatokuma along the Kintampo-Tamale highway on Sunday night.

The Yendi-Kumasi bound bus with registration number AS 4635-22, which had 52 passengers on board, crashed into the side of a trailer truck whose number is GW 1127 P, which was laden with tiles.

Even though it is unclear what actually caused the accident, eyewitnesses alleged that the truck driver in an attempt to swerve a stationary truck, wrongfully entered the lane of the bus, resulting in a near-collision.

Twenty-two persons died on the spot while one died later at the Kintampo Municipal Hospital.

The dead have since been deposited at the Kintampo Government Hospital morgue whilst the surviving victims are receiving treatment at the same facility.

Upon hearing the unfortunate news, the Bono East Regional Minister, Kwesi Adu Gyan visited the accident scene and those at the hospital.

The medical doctor in charge of the hospital, Anthony Twum, informed the minister that six of the injured are in critical condition and need to be referred to a teaching hospital for further attention.

He appealed to authorities to help upgrade the Kintampo Municipal Hospital with state-of-the-art emergency treatment centre to provide healthcare for victims of severe injuries that often happen at Kintampo-Tamale highway.

The drivers of the vehicles are assisting the police in their investigations.
