Five people have been killed in crossfire between police and suspected criminals in Bortianor and nearby communities in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

A statement signed by Police Director of Public Affairs, ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, said the police were conducting anti-robbery and anti-landguard operations in the area when the shootout happened on June 8, 2023.

The statement noted that the five were among those terrorising people and landowners in Bortianor and surrounding communities.

“Upon spotting the approaching police team, the suspects opened fire from their hideout, prompting the police to return fire,” the statement added.

“As a result, five of the suspects were injured and later pronounced dead at the hospital. The remaining suspects fled the scene and are still on the run,” the police indicated.

One AK47 assault rifle, 10 rounds of AK47 ammunition, one pump action gun with nine rounds of BB cartridges, two pistols with 10 rounds of 9mm ammunition, one unregistered Toyota Tacoma pickup, four motorbikes, three of which are unregistered, a knife, and pepper spray were recovered from the crime scene, according to the statement.

“The police are actively pursuing the remaining suspects, some of whom are believed to have sustained gunshot injuries during the operation,” the statement pointed out.

The police urged the public, especially residents of the Bortianor community, to promptly report any individuals with gunshot wounds who may be seeking medical treatment.

“Your cooperation will assist the Police in taking immediate action,” the statement appealed.
