Six workers of Consar Construction Company Limited, a construction firm, last Saturday died at the Newmont Ahafo Mines at Kenyasi No 2 after a reclaim tunnel roof collapsed.
They are Kojo Bismarck, Gideon Amankwa, Kwadwo Asare, Ben Brako Agyei Wale and Ebenezer Sarfo.
Their bodies have since been deposited at St Elizabeth’s Hospital mortuary at Hwediem in the Asutifi South District of the Brong Ahafo Region.
Four others, who also sustained various degrees of injury and were rushed to Newmont SOS Clinic, have been treated and discharged.
They included Kwame Seth, Daniel Dzitor, Musa Sulemana and another person, whose name was not readily known at the time of filing this report.
Brong Ahafo Regional Police Spokesman, Chief Inspector Augustine Oppong confirmed the incident to DAILY GUIDE on the phone.
Explaining further, he said the dead and the injured were constructing a reclaim tunnel roof (a concrete structure) and in the process of sending a tank holding the mortar to the top, it collapsed on them, killing the six people instantly.
“Attempts by some workers at the scene to rescue the trapped failed because of the large quantity of the mixture,” he said.
Meanwhile, Newmont Ghana Gold Limited has suspended all operations at the Ahafo Mine to inform families of the deceased about the incident.
In a statement, the mining firm said all employees working with the company have been safely relocated to prevent further injuries.
The statement further said all appropriate government and regulatory agencies in the mining sector, including the Inspectorate Division of the Minerals Commission, had been informed accordingly.
DAILY GUIDE learnt that the Lands and Natural Resources Minister, John Peter Amewu, visited the accident scene to assess the situation and also console the bereaved families.
