The scene of the accident
The Accra-Cape Coast Highway last Saturday recorded another fatal motor accident in which six people were confirmed dead.
The accident occurred at Gomoa Dominase Junction when a Mercedes Benz Sprinter bus with registration number GS 870-12, from Winneba Junction to Accra, collided with a Hyundai H100 with registration number GX-2894-17.
Chief Inspector Emmanuel Konadu from the Dominase Police Station who led police personnel, said that when they got to the scene, they saw six dead bodies (five females and a male) on the ground.
“When we rushed to the scene, we saw six bodies which comprised five women and a man. There were two other critically injured persons stuck in front of the Sprinter bus due to the heavy impact and it took the intervention of the Winneba Fire Service to get them out and sent to the hospital,” he disclosed.
Explaining the possible cause of the accident, the police officer said, “We got information that the Sprinter was moving from Winneba to Kasoa and had been overtaking almost every vehicle. The Hyundai H100 was moving in the opposite direction. It was following a tipper truck called Flat Body.
“The driver of the Flat Body saw the Sprinter making a dangerous overtaking and in the process, his vehicle veered off the road and the Sprinter collided with the Hyundai H100.
“In fact, it is a serious accident. There are so many injured passengers. We have been able to rush the injured to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba and others to the Municipal Hospital also in Winneba. We sent all the dead bodies to the Trauma Morgue.
“The Fire Service from Winneba helped us to remove those who were stuck in the Sprinter. We have also been able to clear the road for free flow of traffic.”
Chief Inspector Konadu posited, “The way the Sprinter drivers are misbehaving on that stretch of the road suggests that there is no law in Ghana. They are over-speeding and killing people in the process needlessly.”
He claimed, “I have observed that anytime there is an accident involving a Sprinter bus, the drivers escape unhurt, some with minor injuries. The deaths have always been passengers. Are they doing that deliberately? We need to act because it is getting out of hand.”
