6th March Committee Inspects Tamale Venue

National Committee for the 62nd Independence celebration addressing the media in Tamale

The National Committee for the 62nd independence celebration has inspected the progress of work and decorations at the Aliu Mahama sports stadium ahead of the event.

A fortnight ago, President Akufo-Addo announced the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in the Northern Region as the venue for this year’s Independence Day celebration.

The announcement has been welcomed and praised by many describing it as a good move to strengthen and deepen the roots of democracy and decentralization.

However, it is believed that the move is as a result of the restoration of peace to the Northern Region and the Dagbon Kingdom at large.

The Planning Committee Chairman, Lord Comey, speaking to the media, said the decision of the President to have the national celebration of independence outside the national capital is a deliberate attempt by the government and the President to market the region and promote democracy.

He added that the Aliu Mahama sports stadium is well in shape to host all the diplomats and heads of states expected to be in the country for the event. He was however quick to add that the facility required some repair works and facelifts that could be done within a week or two.

The Northern Regional Minister, Salifu Saeed, has thanked the President for choosing the Northern Region for this year’s Independence Day celebration.

He said the region and its inhabitants are most humbled and honoured to be given the privilege of hosting the 62nd Independence Day celebration.

He further charged the Tamale metro and Sagnarigu municipality to embark on clean-up exercises in their respective territories to improve sanitation in the region.

Addressing the media, Jefferson Sackey, Communication Unit of the Presidency, said the 62nd Independence celebration would start officially with a Christiansburg crossroads shooting incident and anniversary debate on 28th February, 2019.

On 1st March, 2019, there will be President’s Independence Day awards for schoolchildren, Muslim prayers and thanksgiving.

On 2nd March, 2019, Tamale peace concert will be held in Tamale.

On 3rd March, 2019, there will be Christian prayer and thanksgiving as well as what do you know quiz and some other activities.

Re-enactment of the declaration of independence and 62nd anniversary fireworks by the military will be held on 5th March, 2019.

The 62nd independence anniversary parade will be held on 6th March, 2019, at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale in the Northern Region.
