UBA Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of United Bank for Africa (UBA), has launched the third edition of its national essay competition for secondary school students across the country.
The foundation therefore called on all Senior High School (SHS) students to participate in the 2016 edition.
The competition, which was launched in 2014 in Ghana, has provided a competitive platform to develop the intellect and writing abilities of students in Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal.
The students stand the chance of winning educational grants to study in any African university of their choice.
The National Eassy competition in Ghana so far has produced six winners, some of which are studying in various universities across Africa.
Abiola Bawuah, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of UBA, in her remarks, said “the numbers that applied last year was not encouraging at all but we hope for a better competition this year and we are counting on the media to disseminate the information widely.”
Mrs. Bawuah called for more collaboration between UBA and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to get more students to participate in this year’s competition.
Mrs Ajuba Adu-Tutu, Programmes Coordinator for Secondary Education Division, gave the assurance that measures had been put in place to make the 2016 edition better and attractive than the previous years.
Evelyn Araba Zentey, the Deputy Divisional Director of Curriculum Research and Development Division of the Ghana Education Service (GES), lauded UBA for its good works.
She also appealed to UBA to consider visual arts and technical students in future competitions.
Entries for the third edition started on Friday, September 30 and would close on Friday, November 11.
Applicants are required to submit handwritten essays of not more than 750 words on the topic, ‘Can young persons in leadership promote national development in Ghana?” to UBA Ghana at the Heritage Towers in Accra.
