The Northern Regional Police Command has arrested two persons at Yendi in the Northern Region for allegedly possessing one AK47 assault rifle.
The two suspects-Alimachie Abdulai and Baba Yakubu, were arrested at Chericherie, a suburb of Yendi with the firearm.
The police in the region conducted a search for firearms after unidentified gunmen fired gunshots to disperse voters who wanted to transfer their votes which compelled Electoral Commission (EC) to close down its office in Tamale.
Some eight armed men arrived at the Electoral Commission’s office in a pick-up and started shooting indiscriminately which injured two students of the University for Development Studies (UDS).
Northern Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO) ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, who confirmed the arrest to DAILY GUIDE, said the police arrested the suspect upon a tip-off.
According to him, the attack on the EC office necessitated the search throughout the region for weapons and other deadly implements in the homes of civilians.
He indicated that the suspects would be arraigned before court after police investigations.
ASP Ebenezer Tetteh stated that they would be charged with possession of firearms without lawful authority.
He sounded a strong warning to residents in the region that the police would deal ruthlessly with anyone who attempts to cause chaos in the region before, during and after the general elections.
