New Deputy Agric Minister Named

Kennedy Osei

President Nana Akufo-Addo has nominated the Member of Parliament (MP) for Akim Swedru in the Eastern Region, Kennedy Nyarko Osei, as a new Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture to replace William Agyapong Quaittoo, who resigned his position about two months ago.

Mr Quaittoo resigned following a public backlash following a controversial statement he made about the people of the north.

Mr Kennedy Nyarko Osei’s nomination is subject to approval by parliament.

The speaker of the house, Prof Mike Oquaye, who made the announcement on the floor yesterday on the first day of its sitting for the third meeting, said the information came from the presidency after which he referred the nomination to the Appointments Committee for vetting.

The announcement was greeted with ‘hear, hear’ from some members on the majority side.

Speaking to the media after his nomination had been referred to the Appointments Committee, Mr Nyarko Osei said he was humbled by the appointment and thanked President Akufo-Addo for the confidence reposed in him.

He commended his predecessor for his good works at the ministry, adding that he would not hesitate to consult him for any assistance.

“I will do whatever I can to help achieve the president’s vision of making agriculture the real backbone of the economy and provide jobs for the teeming unemployed,” he said.

Mr. Nyarko is the Chairman of Parliament’s Local Government Committee.

The nominee is a trained journalist, professional advertiser and marketer. He comes from Akyem Awisa in the Eastern Region of Ghana.
