A section of the police personnel
The Western Regional Police Command has deployed 1,000 police personnel across the region to undertake both covert and overt operations before, during and after the Christmas and the New Year festivities.
This is part of efforts by the command to create a congenial atmosphere for all persons in the region to celebrate the Christmas and the New Year peacefully.
The Commander, DCOP Kwasi Mensah Duku, disclosed this when he briefed the media in Takoradi on the preparedness of the police to ensure peaceful Yuletide and New Year celebrations.
He noted that the festivities are always associated with increased commercial, economic and social activities, adding, “Due to that, criminals take undue advantage of the situation to perpetrate crime before, during and after the festivities.”
DCOP Kwasi Mensah Duku indicated that day and night patrols had been intensified to ensure that people go about their activities without any hindrance.
He added that the patrols had been extended to market, residential areas, key installations, the beaches, entertainment centres, churches and other special events.
He also indicated that anti-robbery highway patrols, under the divisional and district commanders, had also been intensified on the highways and major roads in the region.
DCOP Kwasi Duku disclosed that personnel of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), supported by the Community Protection Assistants under the Youth Employment Agency, had been deployed to road intersections, roundabouts and hotspots in the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies in the region to ensure free flow of traffic.
He appealed to drivers to comply with the Road Traffic Regulations to ensure the safety of passengers.
He stressed that the ban on the use of fire crackers is still in force and urged the general public to comply with the order to avoid any trouble.
