Father Andrew Campbell
Parish Priest of Christ The King Church, Accra, Father Andrew Campbell, has attributed some mental health cases in Ghana to what he termed as “broken family system”.
Speaking at a mental health forum organised by the Harvard University Centre For African Studies on Friday, January 12 under the theme: ‘Mental Moments – Demystifying Madness’, Father Campbell bemoaned the alarming rate at which the family system in Ghana was breaking down.
The forum was aimed at discussing solutions for improving mental health treatment in Ghana
Such break downs in family systems, he said, were exposing many children to the streets where they are further being exposed to various narcotic drugs.
“Family life is breaking down. There is something missing in our homes,” Father Campbell stated.
He said as Parish Priest of Christ The King, he has had to deal with many children from the streets of Accra, especially those at lorry stations and many of them have been victims of drug abuse.
According to him, many children on the streets as a result of broken marriages and family systems are on a daily basis abusing drugs.
