Generator Fume Kills 2

The generator connected to the main switch

Two persons believed to be operators of a soccer betting shop called Eurobet, have been discovered dead in the bet shop at Haatso, near Madina in Accra.

The deceased persons, identified as Kwasi Victor  alias Derrick, aged 27 and Alidu Bako alias Agogo, aged 19, according to the police, died in their sleep while a generator set they had switched on was still running when the windows were all locked.

It is suspected that the two colleagues might have died as a result of the long hours of inhalation of the fume that emanated from the generator set.

Confirming the story to DAILY GUIDE, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Efia Tenge, said the police received news of the dead persons at about 11:00 am on Monday.

According to the police officer, preliminary information gathered indicated that the credit on their prepaid meter ran out and so the deceased persons put on their Honda EC 6500 power generator to continue with their work.

While closing on that Sunday night, the two, who always sleep in the shop, left the generator on inside the shop, locked all the windows and went to bed.

The following Monday, one  Daniel Yeboah, manager of the bet shop, said  he called Derrick several times on phone but there was no answer and so he sent a brother-in-law to the shop to see what was happening.

ASP Tenge said when the said brother-in-law got to the shop, at about 11:00 am, the doors were locked with the generator still running and so he forced open the windows and entered the shop only to find the two lying on their mattresses dead.

The Madina police were informed and when they got to the scene, the police found the generator still connected to the main switch.

The bodies have been deposited at the Police Hospital for preservation and autopsy.

Investigations into the matter are still ongoing.
