Government Replaces Dilapidated Classroom Block In Abesim

The new 6-unit classroom block

TEACHERS AND students of Abesim Presby Junior High School in the Sunyani Municipality of  the Brong Ahafo Region have expressed gratitude to the government for hurriedly putting up a new 6-unit classroom block for the school to replace the dilapidated one.

At a short ceremony yesterday to inaugurate the building, the Municipal Chief Executive of Sunyani, Ama Kumi Richardson, said President Akufo-Addo had directed all assemblies to complete all stalled projects in their respective jurisdictions, for which reason funds were quickly mobilized for the completion of the 6-unit classroom block. The project had been halted for two years.

According to her, the old building, which was built in the 1950s, posed as a death trap to the students. The assembly could not wait for a disaster to occur before coming to their aid hence the need to quickly put up the new building, which will improve teaching and learning in the school.

She also entreated teachers in the school to put up their best to teach the students. According to her,   President Akufo-Addo sees education as the only means to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor in the country and that is why his government has introduced the Free SHS policy. Therefore, she asked the students to study hard, excel in their exams and enjoy the Free SHS programme.

The headmaster of the school, Boakye Marfo, thanked the assembly and the government for the swift manner in which the new building was completed.  He said the students would move in as early as possible. He appealed for urinals and toilet facilities since the school is a cluster of schools with over 700 students, pupils and teachers using only two urinals.

He disclosed: “Sometimes, students queue to urinate. Both males and females including teachers use the same urinals”. He further appealed for furniture and computer laboratory to enhance the teaching of ICT in the school.

According to the contractor, Joekona Company Limited, the 6-unit block cost GH¢ 350,000 and is a GETFUND project.

Abesimhene, Nana Kumi Acheaw 11, thanked the government for the building and advised the teachers and pupils to take good care of it.
