SONA 2019
The Menzgold scandal has been described by President Nana Akufo Addo as a criminal phenomenon.
The President has therefore appealed to all Ghanaians to learn from the Menzgold saga going into the future.
Nana Akufo Addo, who was delivering the 2019 state of the nation address Thursday in Parliament, urged state investigative bodies to ensure that perpetrators of such criminal schemes were brought to justice.
According to him, his administration had put in place measures to ensure that such schemes like Menzgold would not rear their ugly heads in the future.
About 5,000 customers have had their funds locked up with the embattled gold collectible firm.
The company is believed to be owing its customers some $42 million.
It was asked to suspend its illegal deposit-taking business with the public on September 7, 2018 after the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) issued a directive.
Menzgold Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Nana Appiah Mensah popularly called NAM1 has since been arrested in Dubai and standing trial in that country.
Customers have been demonstrating and calling on the President to intervene and have their funds paid back to them.
But the President admonished that all Ghanaians should be mindful of such schemes.
He has pledged to deal with criminality in the financial sector, especially the banking sector.
