Thomas Nintori educating the drivers
The central Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), in conjunction with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), has organised an educational workshop for about 200 motor riders arrested for committing various road traffic offences.
The riders were taken through various topics such as road traffic regulations, road signs and processes of securing a valid rider’s licence at the DVLA offices.
The commander in charge of the central MTTU, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Anderson Fosu Ackaah, said the police were tired of arresting the same people over and over again.
He disclosed that the command had arrested and prosecuted about 114 okada riders from January 4 to February 21 this year, and 80 of them who were sent to court were fined various amounts totalling GH¢55,840.
He stated that after the education, any okada rider arrested would not be spared but prosecuted.
The commanding officer urged the riders to try and have their licences, road worthy certificates and insurance before hitting the road.
He also urged them to always put on riders’ protective gears, including a helmet to prevent death in road accident.
The manager in charge of the DVLA Training School, Thomas Nintori, educated the riders on the processes of acquiring a valid rider’s licence. He advised them to desist from engaging the services of “goro” boys for their licences.
Mr. Nintori asserted: “It is necessary for a rider who needs a licence to walk to the DVLA offices and follow the procedures which cost GH¢376 instead of involving a ‘goro’ boy who would end up issuing a fake licence to the person”.
He urged the riders to endeavour to get their licences to avoid being arrested again.
Also present were Superintendent Agnes Caesar, Deputy Commanding Officer of central MTTU, and other senior police officers of the unit.
