Legon Cities captain and goalkeeper Fatau Dauda has called on lovers of football to keep believing in the Black Stars.
The senior national soccer male side has since 1982 (38 years) not laid hands on any silverware; a situation which cried for answers for close to four decades.
But the former Ashgold and Eyimba man is optimistic victory is in sight soon, and has, therefore, called for unflinching support for the team.
Near misses in 1992 when Abedi Pele/ Tony Baffoe led the team in Senegal, 2010 when goalkeeper Richard Olele Kingson captained in Angola and in 2015 when Asamoah Gyan was the skipper in Equatorial Guinea robbed Ghana the chance to win it for the fifth time.
Ghana Football Association (GFA), after handing CK Akonnor a two-year contract, has tasked him to win the next edition of the championship.
“Sometimes you have to understand the supporters because they love the Black Stars and want to see them win a trophy but this is football and it is unpredictable,” Dauda told Metro TV.
The former Orlando Pirates man added, “The team have come close but I am convinced that the Black Stars will win a trophy soon. We have to keep on believing and support the team in any situation.
“We the players always want to win but I believe the team will end the trophyless jinx soon.”
Meanwhile, Crystal Palace forward Jordan Ayew has promised his best shot for the team in the next edition of the competition.
“The only thing I can promise is that I’ll give my three hundred or four hundred per cent to the nation,” he told Citi Sports.
He added, “I know it’s only one thing and it is the African Cup of Nations, so we will make sure that when we go back to the next AFCON, we will do our best to perform very well and die for the country.”
