NPP Drops Three Seats In Eastern Region

The Ruling New Patriotic Party has lost three of its parliamentary seats in the Eastern Region.

The NPP in the last election had 27 seats with the NDC having five out of the 33 Constituencies.

The NPP lost seats in Akwatia, Ayensuoano and Upper Manya Krobo as they now have 24 seats making the NDC jumping from five to seven seats.

The NPP won the Upper West Akim (Adeiso) seat previously held by the NDC. It has been the stronghold of the NDC for the first time since 1992.

In 2016, the NPP won the Akwatia and Upper Manya Krobo Constituencies respectively magically and also due to some internal wrangling in the NDC.

With Akwatia seat, the incumbent Member of Parliament, Mercy Ama Gyamfi Bello aka Ama Sey who dethroned NDC Baba Jamal in 2016 lost her second term reelection bid to Ernest Kumi in the party parliamentary primaries.

She later decided to contest as an Independent candidate but the party appealed to her to have a change of mind.

At the just-ended parliamentary election, the NPP parliamentary candidate for the area, Ernest Kumi got 18,742 votes making the NDC candidate, Okoye to secure a victory with 19,899 votes.

The results gathered indicate that the residents cast their votes on Skirt and Blouse in favour of the NDC candidate.

With the Presidential race, President Akufo-Addo won with 21,758 votes from Akwatia by beating former President John Mahama who had 16,281 votes.

The NPP Upper Manya Krobo Member of Parliament, Joseph Tetteh lost to the NDC due to his health conditions which were used against him.

At Ayensuano, Samuel Ayeh Paye, who is seeking for his fourth term lost the seat.

So far, the NPP is leading in the Presidential Results in the Eastern Region.
