It was all merry and excitement at the private residence of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Nima – Accra, when he was declared winner of the Monday, December 7 presidential election.
President Akufo-Addo of the NPP polled 6,730,587, representing 51.303%, to beat former President John Mahama of the NDC who garnered 6,213,182 representing 47.359% in the eighth election of the Fourth Republic.
The declaration on Wednesday evening by the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Mrs. Jean Mensa, who is the Returning Officer of the presidential election, paved way for President Akufo-Addo to start a second term mandate on January 7, 2021.
The President has since named a transition team in consonance with the provisions of Presidential (Transition) Act, 2012, (Act 845).
Scores of well-wishers gathered at the President’s residence to congratulate him on his successful second term bid.
Taking the centre stage was First Lady Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo who was seen hugging Mr. President all over.
Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Second Lady Samira Bawumia were also elated during the occasion as they also congratulated the President on his second term feat.
The President allowed almost all those around to have a photo opportunity with him but it was done under strict Covid-19 protocols.
Earlier in his acceptance speech, President Akufo-Addo had called on his political opponents to join him in building the nation now that the campaign season was over.
With elections over and results declared, he urged Ghanaians to close their ranks to forge ahead for the nation’s forward march.
He promised to be different from other presidents who during their second terms “take it easy” and said he would continue to work hard because, as he put it, “I am different.”
He promised to work hard to restore Ghana’s pre-COVID-19 pandemic status as the fastest growing economy in the world.
