The Ministry of Roads and Highways says plans are far advanced to have work begin on the design and construction of the Accra-Tema Motorway as well as other extension projects.
This follows the successful signing of a contract by the Government with Mota-Engil, Engenharia E Construcao Africa SA, for the project after approval by the Public Procurement Authority and the Central Tender Review Board.
A statement issued and signed by Roads and Highways Minister Kwasi Amoako-Atta, and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra noted that the project would take place from the Tema Interchange through Apenkwa Interchange to Neoplan Junction.
The scope of works under the contract, the statement said included the reconstruction and expansion of the existing motorway(19.5km) into a two-lane dual carriageway for the freeway, and a three-lane dual carriageway for the urban highway.
The freeway, it added would, however, remain concrete surfacing, whilst the urban highway would be in asphalt concrete with paved shoulders.
It also included the reconstruction of the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange to Apenkwa Interchange (5.7km) into a six-lane dual carriageway with asphaltic concrete surfacing; reconstruction of Tesano Junction – Neoplan Junction (2.5km)into a three-lane dual carriageway in asphaltic concrete surfacing and the construction of five (5) new interchanges at Lashibi, Community 18 Junction, Teshie Link Junction, Dzorwulu Junction and Neoplan Junction to facilitate traffic movement at the junctions.
“Remodeling of the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange to eliminate the perennial congestion; reconstruction of Apenkwa Interchange; rehabilitation of Achimota Interchange; provision of streetlights; construction of fourteen (14) new pedestrian footbridges to ensure the safe crossing of pedestrians, where necessary; and construction of Toll plazas,” the statement added.
The statement explained that the actual construction works would commence immediately after the detailed design had been approved, and the relocation of services were completed.
“The Employer during this time will also be engaging stakeholders and persons affected by the project to ensure all issues are resolved,” it said.
