Don’t Set Up Nation For Destruction – NCCE Boss

NCCE Boss, Josephine Nkrumah delivering her address

The Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Josephine Nkrumah, has called on citizens to play their respective roles to foster national unity and cohesion in order to protect the democratic gains of the country.

She advocated that holistic approach and interest of the country, which includes the promotion of national unity, should be given priority in addressing issues that have the tendencies to polarise the country.

“We are setting ourselves up for destruction and it means that the democratic gains we have made over the years will go to waste. It therefore behoves me to speak national unity and it behoves you to speak national cohesion,” she said.

The Chairperson, who was addressing some personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service in Accra on Tuesday as part of the annual Constitution Week celebration, indicated the solemn declaration made to God by all factions in the country to accept the 1992 Constitution made it binding on all to promote national cohesion.

“Even in the solemn declaration that we made in the preamble of the constitution, we used the word unity and stability and that makes the constitution a rallying point for all of us,” she added.

Ms. Nkrumah also encouraged security personnel as guardians of the constitution to be loyal to the constitution and eschew any act that would deflect their loyalty and lead to polarisation of the service.

She also spoke about the need for the citizens who charter a path of probity and accountability to do so within the confines of the law.

In an interview, an Assistant Divisional Officer II, Prince Larbi, commended the effort of the NCCE in educating Ghanaians about the constitution.

He, however, entreated that more activities on the constitution be organised frequently so as to deepen the knowledge of citizens about the document.

This year’s celebration of the constitution week was themed, “We are one, Ghana first.”
