Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi
A group calling itself Patriotic Citizens of NPP is urging delegates of the ruling party to vote for Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi as the National Chairman to make the New Patriotic Party (NPP) a powerful electoral force to break the 8-year jinx of power alternation in the country.
Conveyor of the group, Osei Antoh Bonsu said the former Education Minister has the leadership qualities to build on recent electoral successes of the NPP and beat competition from the power-hungry opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Addressing the media at the International Press Centre in Accra yesterday, the Patriotic Citizens want the party’s delegates to remain bound to vote for Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi when he eventually submits to join the race.
So far, Stephen Ntim, outgoing SIGA Boss Stephen Asamoah Boateng and current NPP National Treasurer Kwabena Abankwah-Yeboah have all expressed interest in becoming the National Chairman of the NPP and are waiting for nomination to be opened.
But the Patriotic Citizens of NPP said Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi stands out, having distinguished himself as an academia, civil servant, MP, and Minister of State, intimating the man is incorruptible.
“He is affable and approachable. Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi has served the party well and distinguished himself. We need him to run affairs of the NPP at this time we are looking forward to breaking the jinx of the 8-year power fluctuation,” Mr. Bonsu stated.
“That’s a steep curve, and we need someone like Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi to negotiate it and bring victory to our party,” he added.
Canvassing for support to the Professor’s bid, the group said the former Techiman North MP is endowed with ideas to take the NPP to higher pedestal, asserting that he introduced the Computerized School Selection and Placement System in Ghana as Director General of the Ghana Education Service.
According to him, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi also brought calm to the port industry when he was appointed Minister by former President John Agyekum Kufuor to work there.
“No one heard of any agitations and complaints from exporters and importers, courtesy the leadership of Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi,” Mr. Bonsu intimated further.
For him, leadership is the accomplishment of a goal through the direction of human assistants, and not who has gone for three or more times. We need a man, who can successfully marshal the party faithful to achieve the success of breaking the eight years.
