One of the affected buildings
A RECENT rainstorm that hit parts of the Tempane District in the Upper East Region has destroyed more than 100 houses, leaving the occupants stranded, homeless and worried over their safety in the coming days.
Both private and public buildings in the district have either been completely or partially destroyed by strong winds that preceded the downpour.
The Tempane District Chief Executive, Anabide Issaka in a media interview said aside from the destroyed houses, there are some 20 electricity poles that were also blown down, thereby throwing some communities into darkness.
The DCE however announced that workers from Northern Electricity Distribution Company and the Volta River Authority (NEDCo/VRA) are in the district to replace all broken electricity poles and to restore electricity to affected communities.
Meanwhile, the Tempane District Chief in an earlier interview on a Bolgatanga based radio station, A1 Radio, confirmed that a 40-year-old man lost his life.
The man was reported to have been hit in the neck and head by a falling branch from a tree as he tried to untie his sheep from the tree during the downpour.
The Upper East Regional office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has warned that there could be more rains with strong winds as the region gets into the rainy season.
The Regional Director, Jerry Asamani says district offices of NADMO have been advising people to fortify their walls and stay away from water bodies to avoid being affected when the volumes increase.
