CETAG Calls Off Month-Long Strike

Prince Obeng Himah

The Colleges of Education Teachers’ Association of Ghana (CETAG) yesterday officially called off its strike action.

President of the Association, Prince Obeng Himah, in an interview yesterday said their action to suspend the strike was necessitated by a directive by the National Labour Commission asking them to call off the strike.

He said, “The latest development is that we have called off the strike action, and it follows the directives given by the National Labour Commission last Wednesday, asking us to call off the action.”

Mr. Himah mentioned that although they did not fully agree with the ruling by the NLC, all members of the Association voted on whether or not CETAG should comply with the instructions of the NLC.

He stated that after a successful voting within the 46 colleges of education in Ghana, majority of its members agreed to comply with the NLC directives,” hence the suspension of the strike.

He said members of the association were expected to resume work yesterday, while the full complement of staff will subsequently work on Thursday.

Mr. Obeng-Himah further said that although government is yet to implement some other three conditions of service given by the Association, accrued arrears on their conditions of service allowances have been paid.

CETAG has explicitly stated that they will be diligently tracking government’s progress in implementing all the arbitral awards.

He also mentioned the Association’s readiness to review its position and take appropriate action by October 31, 2023, if government fails to meet its responsibilities.
