Kwesi Agyeman Busia speaking at the media briefing
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) will host the International Driver and Vehicle Innovations Conference (IDVIC) in Accra on Tuesday, October 10, 2023.
The conference, on the theme, “The Future of Road Transport” will create a platform for vehicle and driver experts to share ideas, discuss challenges, and explore solutions that can help to improve the road transport sector in the country.
Speaking at a media briefing on the up-coming conference, Chief Executive Officer of DVLA, Kwesi Agyeman Busia, said road transport serves as the predominant mode of transportation in Ghana, accounting for more than 95% of the passenger market share and 90% of cargo traffic.
He noted that transformative innovations are rapidly emerging within the transportation sector, offering promising solutions to revolutionize Ghana’s road transport landscape.
“Technological advancements, such as electric and hybrid vehicles, reduce emissions and contribute to a greener and more sustainable transportation ecosystem. Moreover, intelligent transportation systems and digital innovations, including ride-sharing platforms and real-time traffic information, optimise transportation efficiency, enhance mobility, and improve overall road network management,” he said.
He further noted that in addition to infrastructure and vehicle-focused innovations, empowering drivers through Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and connected vehicle technologies is crucial as they help to enhance driver safety, improve vehicle performance, and enable real-time monitoring of driving behaviour, contributing to a safer and more efficient road transport environment.
He, thus, noted that the conference will bring together key stakeholders including government agencies, industry experts, and academia to dialogue and share best practices and experiences with the aim of developing updated and comprehensive regulatory frameworks that align with international standards.
Conference Committee Chair, Abraham Zaato, in his presentation said the conference has three main objectives; Innovate, Reinvent and Sustain.
“The conference will explore innovative and cutting-edge technologies towards enhancing safety and sustainability with regard to Driver and Vehicle Licensing; examine the role of public-private partnerships in reinventing driver and vehicle licensing management and how they can contribute to sustainable development,” he said.
He also noted that the conference will promote sustainable practices in the road transport sector with a focus on reducing greenhouse emissions, improving air quality, and minimizing waste and how DVLA can be repositioned to administer its mandate amid green transport interventions.
