The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) has vowed to go the extra mile to rid the city of filth and bring back its beautiful scenery.
In line with this, the assembly has launched the ‘Operation Clean Your Surroundings’ campaign, aimed to enforce the assembly’s environmental sanitation bye-laws among others.
The campaign will educate, caution, arrest, prosecute, name and shame sanitation-related offenders across the metropolis.
The assembly has also introduced a new clean-up model which focuses primarily on electoral areas, as a supplement to the National Sanitation Day Policy.
The intention is to make cleaning of the communities an integral part of day-to-day activities of the people and to always ensure cleaner surroundings.
The Mayor of Sekondi-Takoradi, Abdul Mumin-Issah, disclosed this when delivering his sessional address at the 3rd Ordinary Meeting of the 4th Session of the 8th Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly held yesterday.
He said, “So far, the exercise has been carried out in some electoral areas in Takoradi and Essikado Sub-Metropolitan areas including Amanful, Ngyiresia, Kojokrom and Essikado.”
“I must commend the assembly members in those electoral areas covered so far for their cooperation and support. We anticipate same level of support, going into the remaining electoral areas to complete the first cycle,” he noted.
Security
He indicated that over the years, the assembly had remain calm and serene with few incidences of petty theft.
He, therefore, urged the people to be more vigilant, and not to hesitate to report to the police suspicious characters or acts in their respective communities.
Property Rate Collection
He disclosed that, the government has reverted the collection of property rate back to the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
To this end, the mayor noted that the Metropolitan Coordinating Director has put together a three-member team to work at preparing and distributing bills for 2023.
“It is our fervent hope we rake in revenue as much as we can before the Christmas break. We hope to count on the support of all assembly members in this regard,” he pointed out.
He added that the Skills Training Centre established through the Twin-Cities in Sustainable Partnership Project (TCSPP) is operational and continues to provide training in specialised areas for beneficiaries from vulnerable groups.
He wished the assembly members seeking re-election in their respective electoral areas in the upcoming District Level Elections the best of luck, adding, “May you be favoured by the electorates on the election day.”
The Presiding Member of the Assembly, John Buckman was happy about the waste-to-diesel plant proposed for a landfill site in the metropolis, to commence next year, which is expected to produce 43 million litres of diesel annually.
