Public Workers To Access Salaries Using Ghana Card

Flashback: President Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia with other officials at the launch of the Ghana Card

The Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) has announced that beginning February 2024, all public sector workers will need their Ghana Card numbers to access their salaries.

According to the CAGD, the new directive forms part of measures to rid the government’s payroll of ghost names.

This was announced following discussions with the National Identification Authority (NIA) regarding a special registration exercise for those yet to acquire the Ghana Card.

A statement, issued and signed by the Deputy Controller and Accountant-General, Wisdom Komlan Messan, said the NIA has since September 4, 2023, opened its offices nationwide for registration of qualified Ghanaians aged 15 years and above, including the targeted Public Sector Employees on government’s payroll.

The Statement thus urged staff to take advantage of the ongoing general registration at all 24 NIA offices between now and January to register for their NIA cards, since priority will be given to them at the centers.

This will be the second time in two years that the Controller and Accountant-General has issued such a directive.

In light of this, CAGD has issued a critical advisory to its staff and members, urging them to register for their Ghana Cards at any of the 292 NIA offices nationwide.
