The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that a total of 4,878 students who sat for this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results have been blocked.
This is as a result of the candidates’ failure to return learning support materials supplied to them by their schools during the examination period.
“The results of 4,878 candidates have been blocked for failing to return learning support materials supplied to them by their schools, and such candidates are to contact their schools,” the WAEC statement read.
The statement further indicated that the subject results of 3,647 candidates have been cancelled for bringing foreign materials like prepared notes, textbooks, and printed materials into the examination halls.
Also, the entire results of 839 candidates have been cancelled for possession of mobile phones in the examination halls.
The subject results of 4,280 candidates and the entire results of 1,005 candidates have been withheld for various suspected offenses.
“Yet still, some subject results of candidates from 235 schools have been withheld for collusion and the use of artificial intelligence-generated answers. These cases are still under investigation. The withheld results of these candidates may be released or cancelled depending on the outcome of investigations,” it said.
Performance Statistics
448,674 candidates made up of 212,453 males and 236,221 females from 975 schools entered the examination. This figure is 5.8% higher than the 2022 entry figure of 422,883. A total number of 3,404 (0.75%) were absent from the examination.
Also, 325,280 candidates representing 73.11% passed English (A1-C6), 276,272 representing 62.23% passed Mathematics, 296,466 representing 66.82% passed Integrated Science, and 340,867 students representing 76.76% passed Social Studies.
The press statement further provided the fluctuating trends in performance from 2020 to date for candidates in English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies.
In 2020, 57.34% passed English, 65.71% passed Mathematics, Integrated Science 52.53%, and Social Studies, 64.31%. 54.08% passed English in 2021, Mathematics 54.11%, Integrated Science 65.70%, and 66.03% for Social Studies. For 2022, 60.39% passed English, Mathematics 61.39%, Integrated Science 62.45%, and Social Studies 71.51%.
