A section of the youth marching at the 67th Independence Day
The youth of Axim in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region have promised to play their respective roles to ensure a peaceful election on December 7, 2024.
They have, therefore, encouraged their colleagues nationwide to conduct themselves in ways that would preserve the peace and unity of the country to ensure uninterrupted development.
They said the youth should not allow themselves to be used to cause mayhem which may jeopardize their future and also plunge the nation into chaos.
The youth, mainly from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) took part in the 67th Independence parade held at the Victoria Park in Axim yesterday, as a voluntary organization.
They held placards with inscriptions some of which read “Different Colours, One People” and “We want Peaceful Elections”.
The parade comprised of school children, cadet corps and other voluntary organisations. The event was also characterized by rich cultural displays.
The country’s 67th independence anniversary is on the theme, “Our Democracy, Our Pride”.
Also present at the colourful ceremony were security officers, traditional rulers, clergy, politicians and the general public.
Speaking in separate interviews after the event, the youth who held flags of the two major political parties in the country during the match past urged politicians to preach peace and engage in healthy conversations that will foster unity and development.
Addressing the gathering, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Eric Essien, called on the people to always uphold the principles that would make the country’s democracy strong.
He also urged all stakeholders to support the assembly’s agenda of bringing development to every part of the municipality.
The MCE, who was recently appointed by the President and confirmed by the assembly members, promised to deal with open defecation which had become a challenge in the ancient fishing town of Axim.
“I am assuring you of my commitment to collaborate with all the stakeholders to ensure development within the municipality,” he pointed out.
The National Democratic Congress’ Member of Parliament for the area, Arko Nokoe emphasized that democracy is the best form of government since it allows every voice to be heard.
“So as a nation, we must fight to defend and protect our democracy and continue to have hope that very soon the country’s economy would improve,” he added.
