FOURTEEN PEOPLE, including children, have sustained injuries after a windstorm hit the mining town of Obuasi, in the Ashanti Region.
The windstorm, according to Frank Darko, an official of Obuasi National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), also affected about 48 houses in the town.
He disclosed that the windstorm resulted in the ripping off of roofing sheets of some of the affected houses, adding that other houses in the area collapsed in the process.
“About 48 houses were affected; some of the affected houses collapsed, whilst the others had their roofing sheets ripped off,” Mr. Darko told journalists.
According to him, the Obuasi Senior High Technical School had their Science Laboratory and a classroom block destroyed, adding that the AGA School JHS block had its roof ripped off.
The NADMO staff noted that some of the people were hit by flying objects when they attempted to run from harm’s way, adding that, “In total, 14 people, including children, were injured.”
Mr. Darko disclosed that all the injured people were rushed to nearby medical facilities, where they were treated by medical staff and discharged same day.
He said the extent of damage caused by the windstorm was massive, and appealed to government, corporate organisations and individuals for support.
